Hidden Gems Exhibition – Celebrating Little Harlem

East Ave Market and Gallery presents, “Hidden Gems”. An exhibition showcasing the history of ‘Little Harlem’ through photography in Akron, Ohio.

Akron, OH, USA — Hidden Gems curated by Natalie Warren is part of a series of exhibitions, displaying historical photography of historical Little Harlem in Akron. Photographs were taken by Horace and Evelyn Stewart and Opie Evans during the Harlem Renaissance era. The exhibition is to be viewed at the East Ave Market and Gallery.

Natalie Warren, an Akron native and winner of the 2021 Knight Art Challenge has curated this exhibition featuring photography archives of Black renaissance in an Akron district nicknamed Little Halem. A downtown area that presented an array of acts at the Akron Theater from the 1930s through the 1940s. The works being displayed were created by Evelyn and Horace Stewart who owned a photo studio on Howard Street, they captured Akron history through the camera lens.

The opening reception is October 14th, 2022 from 4 pm- 9pm on 2290 East Avenue Akron, 44314. With free admission, refreshments, and a wide variety of historical pieces, it is bound to be a rousing experience.

The East Ave Market is an urban market and art space. Our focus is on supporting local makers and providing a space for artists to showcase their work. The East Ave Market started in 2017 as a monthly flea market event held by So Fresh Used Auto Sales (one of the only female-owned and operated auto mechanic shops in the area) And has since become an incubator for small businesses and makers.
